Handy with the Steel and I are planning an archery hunt for deer in or around D13 in 2017. Right now, I'm thinking we should scout the area near Mutau Flats off of Lockwood Valley Road. I'm using Google Earth to help spot places to scout.

I'm thinking we should scout the area around the Thorn Point Trail and Thorn Point. To get there, you take Mutau Flats Road passed the first water crossing. Then, rather than making the next left and another water crossing, you continue straight. It looks like there are fewer camp grounds over there, thicker vegetation, and the road climbs up to over 6,600 feet.

With my new bow set up, I'm thinking of switching from The Montec fixed broadhead to the Grim Reaper Razorcut SS with 1 3/8" diameter.

The bow is currently set at 60lbs with a 28" draw length. Arrows and heads would be about 39 grains.

Any thoughts in this?

EDITED TO ADD: Or how about the Grim Reaper Carnifour?

Do you want to scout the Mutau Flats area the last weekend of January?

Sure. One frustrating thing, however, is we never know what parts of Los Padres will be open at any time of the year. Mutau area is often closed in winter.

I can call the ranger and find out if it's open.

I'll plan to bring my mountain bike to help with the scouting. Yoppster and T-Bo will also be invited, and anyone else who wants to come is welcome as well.
